Mine IT!

uh! Those erstwhile 500MB hDD days - you can sympathize yourselves jabbering away about them to your kids now! 100GB HDD is the commonplace today and with hardware being available at incredibly inexpensive prices (this is one reason why one should never be looking into computer hardware stocks), people no longer care to think of what to save and what to trash! So, useful or useless! - every little piece of information gets stashed away...... everyone is a garbage collector(not just scorpios who are known as born GCs). The fed policies like Sarbanes oxley (which warrants companies to save every email and other electronic data for a minimum of 7 years), HIPPAA add fuel to the fire .

So, now with all this heaves of data...What do we do with it? We ought to make some use of it eh?
We might as well MINE IT, right? Learn something from the data thats been sitting idle...make patterns out of it, cluster it, learn new things, make predictions , make life more easier(by complicating it eh?)

Two recent applications of Datamining which have been in news :
Data mining at MIT to predict crystal shapes
Data mining of student Financial Aid records by FBI to learn new things about possible terrorists.

Its unfortunate that I never made time to publish my work in Data mining - Nevertheless, there is some day and am waiting for that one day! :)
