Hail Dario!

Dont get confounded with the slew of commands I threw up here - I just consolidated them here so I wouldn't forget writing about these wonderful pandora's box of troubles that popped on the laptop I was working on this morning - had to do with the Oracle setup on my machine. Hail Dario - he helped me out troubleshooting these issues.

So, I was done with my SCJP exam yesterday and yes, I passed. And I come back to work and being so happy and its known that happiness begets success, right - So, I was all cruising along happily fixing bugs ..........yeyeyeye.! All the tests passed and what happens?

It all started with me waiting for the gumby and firing up the checkinSqlTests which everyone would normally fire up when actually checking in into the CVS. So, It happened that all my SQL tests were passing fine and well - lalala...except the 337th test failed. It complained of the "java.sql.sqlException - 12519"

Well, this is the exact error message
java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Connection refused(DESCRIPTION=(TMP=)(VSNNUM=153092864)(ERR=12519)(ERROR_STACK=(ERROR=(CODE=12519)(EMFI=4))))

The one test that was failing was opening connections, closing connections - well I mean to say its making use of multiple connections.

So, when we did this ->
select * from v$parameter where name like '%session%'
- mine(my machine) was running low at 60 sessions as opposed to all other systems which had 170 sessions.

And, when we did this ->
select * from v$parameter where name like '%open_cursors%'
- mine was running low at 300 cursors and everyone else has it set to 1000 cursors

So, we need to change these parameters, right? how hard could that be?
Well, it turned out that these fields are not system modifiable.

Startup pfile

sqlplus [username]/[password] as sysdba

startup pfile=c:\oracle9i\admin\ORCL9I\pfile\initORCL9I.ora

create pfile from spfile

create spfile from file

minor trivialities.

As I work my way out preparing for the SCJP5.0 exam, (actually, I should confess that I began to spend more time on computer in the name of the exam, just because my folks can't rave about me sitting infront of computer all the time now. yee...I now have an excuse) there are lot of things that come to my mind which I could pen about.(am just jotting them down but remind me to blog about them sometime after next week, lest I would forget) .

1.Pairing with a female programmer - In a programming world, PAS team predominantly dominated by male programmers, pairing with a female programmer from our project has come as a pleasant, interesting experience. Its so nice to have female-homosapien, other than me, in my team .To be honest, I don't remember an instance of me ever pairing with a lady programmer before.

2. Blogging - a new form of literature?

2. Going for a LONG vacation from work. Advisable or not?

3.aaah! still need to jot down my take aways from the NFJS symposium. Simon's already mentioned most of what I noticed..
.....that Dr.VENKAT Subrmaniam was the best speaker up there. I just admired his knowledge, teaching skills and the timely humour and ofcourse, for the candies that I got for staying awake during the quiz time.
....that all speakers , except for venkat, were using Apple . Its a cute little thing.
....etc.

now, wish me luck on my exam. I will get to some studying and check the blog back after a week or so :)

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing to you - "My new cool workplace where I can code in ecstasy" ......yeah right, I know that you know that I am kidding. Nevertheless, I so badly want to work in such a work ambience (Joe and Ted, hope you are reading this post...kidding) , rather say - would have been PURRRFECT if PAS project I am working on is set in any of these workplaces :) - ah! well! or I wouldn't even mind pair programming in the OIL fields( darn no! winter is imminent) . Alrighty, lemme cut my crap.

Harps borrowed this book from Ted today. And Harps was generous to give me a chance to peek into it :) and yeppers,I have added it to my "A must read" list. The basic outlines of the book are elicited here. And you can read the "100 star" reviews about the book here.

Although, the book has been written way before even I was born, the principles of software engineering the author delineates in the book still remain contemporary, just because they are pure common sense principles.
